Chirping

I tracked down this brief NPR story from 2005 because I remember how it crossed topics, covering both a biological field science subject and a human interest subject. You get a chance to listen closely to dialects of birds and the dialects of people. It's worth listening just to hear the accents in the second half.

I listened to this in Nicaragua, where I am conducting hearing tests for miners. Listening to the birds in this report made me sad that all of the loud noises of the modern world, especially the modern developing world, such as fireworks, bus horns, loud music are damaging are hearing so that many young people today will probably be unable to hear bird songs by the time they are 50 years old.
